Short hairpin RNA is an artificial piece of RNA that looks like a hairpin and it is used to silence gene expression by asking the cell (nicely) to make siRNA (small interfering RNA). To get these little pieces of RNA into the cell, scientists use either viral or bacterial vectors to sneak them in. After that, the cell is their oyster.
